Tourists and residents alike have a hard time running out of things to do in Austin and the surrounding areas. From world-class dining, museums, and theaters, to picturesque hill hikes and Division I football, Central Texas has something for everybody. 

Music  

One of Austin’s nicknames is “Live Music Capital of the World,” and it’s easy to see why! Austin boasts over 120 live music venues in the city, and has spectacular events such as the South by Southwest Music and Film Festival and the Austin City Limits Music Festival.
 

Museums and Getaways  

For those who like their entertainment on the quieter side, Austin is just a short drive away from the Texas Hill Country. In this beautiful area with its sprawling peach orchards and ranches, popular attractions can also be found, such as former president Lyndon Johnson’s estate; and the city of Fredericksburg, founded by German settlers in 1846, that today continues to provide a glimpse into traditional German pioneer culture. 

Among Austin’s many great museums are the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, where exciting exhibits documenting the story of Texas can be enjoyed, and the Harry Ransom Center at UT, which has one of the world’s best cultural archives.
 

Sports and Recreation 

It’s impossible to be in Central Texas long without noticing the pride area residents have in the UT Longhorns. The University of Texas at Austin has one of the top Division I athletic programs in the country. Football games are always major events; but even after fall has come and gone, sports fans continue to cheer for basketball, track, baseball, and the many other sports in which the Longhorns excel. 

Outside of spectacular college athletics, there are several local teams that keep sports fans busy: Triple-A baseball’s Round Rock Express, Ice Bats hockey, and the Arena Football League’s Austin Wranglers. 

If you prefer tossing a Frisbee or taking nature walks, you’ll find yourself in the right place. With literally hundreds of parks in Central Texas, families, picnickers, and joggers never run out of options. There are also seven lakes within the Austin area, two of which are within the city limits; and regional lakes and swimming holes are perfect for cooling off when the weather warms up.
 

Shopping 

With every kind of retail store from upscale boutiques and department stores to malls, outlets, and of course, Western Outfitter, Central Texas is a shopper’s dream. Austin also boasts BookPeople - the largest bookstore in Texas.
